Richard Degner

Richard A. Degner is the founder and CEO of Geophysical Technology Inc., an oil field technology firm focused on next generation geophysical technology development.  Previously, Mr. Degner was the founder, Chairman, and CEO of Global Geophysical Services, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas.  Mr. Degner built Global from inception and served as the Chairman, CEO and President from June 2003 to October 2012.

Prior to founding Global Geophysical Services, Mr. Degner spent 3½ years building PGS Onshore around several hundred of the best people in the seismic business. Under Mr. Degner’s leadership, PGS developed an excellent reputation as an innovative and high quality provider of land and TZ geophysical services.

Prior to PGS, Mr. Degner had an accomplished 16-year career with Western Geophysical, where he joined in 1984 after earning degrees in both Geophysical and Geological Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. Since managing Western Geophysical’s first land 3D seismic project in Latin America in 1985, Mr. Degner designed and/or executed hundreds of land and transition zone 3D projects worldwide. He became the worldwide Land Product Line Leader for Western’s industry leading land and TZ seismic operation. He also served as Vice President of Western Hemisphere Operations. As a leader of the largest geophysical operator worldwide, Mr. Degner established a vast experience base and good reputation from oil and gas clientele throughout the world.

Mr. Degner graduated from Rice University’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He is an active member in the Society of Exploration Geophysics, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and served as a board member of the International Association of Geophysical Contractors. Mr. Degner has served on Stanford University’s “Earth Science Advisory Board”, and at the Colorado School of Mines’ “Geophysical Advisory Board”. He is an active member of Gerson Lerhman’s council of Energy Advisors.  Mr. Degner was the 2012 regional award winner of the Ernst and Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” program for oil field technology.

Hank Hamilton

Mr. Hamilton resides in Houston, Texas and is currently the Chairman of TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Company ASA (TGS), a $2.8 billion publicly traded company specializing in providing geoscientific data and services to the oil & gas exploration and production industry.  Previously he served as Chief Executive Officer of TGS from 1995 through June of 2009, where he developed the company from a small, privately held niche player in the Gulf of Mexico market to the recognized global leader in multi-client geophysical and geological data products. After earning a bachelor’s degree in physics at the University of North Carolina, Hank began his career as a geophysicist with Shell Offshore (1981-1987), where he gained valuable experience in developing, utilizing and managing seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation techniques. During these years he attended Tulane University’s AB Freeman School of Business at nights, earning 30 course hours of MBA credit. In 1987 he moved to Schlumberger (1987-1995) where he successfully commercialized the business model for multi-client 3D surveys, managed the growth of the company’s marine acquisition business in Europe by expanding the fleet of operated vessels from 6 to seventeen over a two-year period, and ultimately held the position of Vice President and General Manager for all geophysical product lines in North and South America. Mr. Hamilton served on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC) from 1993-2011 and currently serves on the boards of Odfjell Drilling, the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) Foundation, and the University of North Carolina Arts & Sciences Foundation. He is also Chairman of the board of Defy Ventures, a privately funded New York City based non-profit organization that provides carefully selected, ambitious men and women who have criminal histories with life-changing entrepreneurship, leadership, and career opportunities, and he volunteers extensively at the Prison Entrepreneurship Program in Texas.

Arthur Tymos

Arthur is a business and community leader with over thirty-three years of experience in an extensive range of leadership roles with emphasis on global leadership, vision and strategy, corporate governance, finance, marketing, information technology and manufacturing. Previously as President & Chief Executive Officer at Creation Technologies, Arthur’s passion for enriching lives was evident in Creation’s people-centered culture.  Originally joining Creation as Chief Operating Officer in 2001, he was promoted to President in 2002 and assumed additional responsibilities as Chief Executive Officer in 2006, leading the company through 2013.  For 12 years, Arthur served on Creation’s Board of Directors and was a Director for numerous Creation subsidiaries. After serving in various marketing, finance and corporate roles with BC TEL from 1980 onward, Arthur was appointed Treasurer of BC TEL and BC TELECOM Inc. in 1993.  He became General Manager of BC TEL Communications Systems in 1995 and was appointed Vice President in 1998.  Later in 1998, he was appointed Vice President & General Manager of BC TEL’s International Wholesale division.  From 1999 through 2001, he served as Vice President & Chief Information Officer for TELUS Corporation. Arthur graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with an Honors Diploma in Financial Management in 1980 and was the recipient of a number of scholarships and academic awards.  In 1983, he obtained his professional accounting designation as a Certified General Accountant and is now also a Chartered Professional Accountant.  Arthur graduated from the Advanced Management Program in Telecommunications at the University of Southern California in 1993 and graduated from the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business in 1994. He served as a director for the Fraser Health Authority from 2006 to 2009 and previously served as a Director and/or Officer of various companies and organizations including roles as Director for Telecom Leasing Canada (TLC) Inc., President and Director for BCMP Real Estate Corporation and Vice President and Director for BCT Risk Management Inc. Arthur currently serves as Chairperson and in other volunteer leadership roles with the Sonrise Church and has served with several charitable organizations.  Over the years, he has maintained memberships in a variety of professional organizations including the Conference Board of Canada, the Financial Executives Institute, the Canadian Information Processing Society and the Vancouver Board of Trade.

Tom Fleure

Prior to joining GTI as VP of Geophysical Technology, Tom Fleure served as Senior Vice President of Geophysical Technology for Global Geophysical Services from its inception in 2004 until 2016 as well as serving on the company’s Board of Directors from 2004 until 2010. During his tenure he helped manage the transition from cabled recording systems to the proprietary AutoSeis nodal recording platform as well as record over 6000 square miles of high quality long offset and wide azimuth multi-client library in several unconventional resource plays in the United States. Prior to participating in the founding of Global Geophysical, Tom Fleure held various technical and managerial positions for 22 years at Western Geophysical and its successor companies including Resident Manager for Saudi Arabia, Managing Director for Nigeria, as well as Operations Manager for Western Hemisphere Marine.

With more than 33 years of experience in the seismic industry, Tom Fleure has a broad knowledge of exploration geophysics ranging from field parameter testing to signal processing. His areas of expertise and research include advanced vibroseis techniques and vibroseis sweep design as well as 3D acquisition geometry and design. He holds multiple patents in these disciplines. Mr. Fleure received a BSc Degree in Geophysical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1982.

Robert Hauser

Vice President, Engineering and Development

Robert joined GTI in September 2015, developing NuSeis firmware and software technology in key areas. Robert successfully navigated multiple challenges to achieve a number of system improvements that have been proven on multiple customer projects. In May of 2017, Robert stepped into the role of Executive Team Lead of Software, working closely with GTI’s chief software architect to deepen the maturity of the NuSeis technical ecosystem. Robert was promoted to VP, Engineering and Development in October of 2017.

Prior to joining GTI, Robert led the day-to-day operations for firmware engineers and electrical engineers at a Flex design center – contributing project management, statement of work, and subject matter expertise in winning a variety of successful design engineering contracts. Prior to Flex, Robert was the Director of Intellectual Property at a software company, focusing engineering on IP development efforts and marketing the resulting patent applications which were sold for a high valuation. Robert’s prior experience includes the following positions: Director of Software for a start-up robotics company, Software Engineer for a middleware company, Software Engineer for a natural language processing company, Software Engineer and sole-developer of the Windows filesystem that shipped with HP CDRW drives, and Software Consultant at Intergraph.

Robert is an accomplished inventor with over 40 patents. Robert received his BA from the University of Northern Iowa in Computer Science and Mathematics and his MS from Michigan State University in Computer Science.

 

Karl Oeler

Karl Oeler joined Geophysical Technology Inc. as the Technology Manager in June of 2014 where he successfully led the development of the NuSeis technology for three years including system design, engineering, NPI manufacturing and system testing. Since May of 2017 Karl transitioned into Director of Customer Support and Technical Sales. Prior to his position with GTI he served as a Senior Support Engineer for Global Geophysical Services from October 2010 to June 2014.  Mr. Oeler was integral in developing the ecosystem hardware and software necessary to operate Global’s nodal recording system. Mr. Oeler was responsible for converting all of Global’s crews in the United States, South America and the Middle East from cabled to nodal recording systems.

Previously Mr. Oeler worked for Ascend Geo LLC. , an early pioneer of nodal seismic technology, as a Senior Support Engineer from May 2008 to September 2010.  Mr. Oeler helped improve Ascend’s Ultra G5 system through various field tests conducted around the world, most notably in the jungles of Belize.

Before Mr. Oeler entered into the seismic industry he worked as a Project Manager in the commercial construction industry and studied mechanical engineering and economics at Carnegie Mellon University.

Nicole Moss

General Counsel

Nicole joined GTI in January 2014 as General Counsel and Secretary.  She also advises several early stage companies on general corporate matters.  Prior to joining GTI, Ms. Moss was in private legal practice where she advised predominantly energy and energy-related companies on corporate and securities matters including formations, raising capital, corporate governance, complex transactions, and exits.   Her clients included E&P, transloading, and ancillary services companies as well as companies producing hardware and software products to the industry.

Prior to her private practice, Ms. Moss was general counsel of Kenmont Capital, a fund platform located in Houston, Texas.  She previously spent five years in the Boston office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges in the Private Equity / Mergers & Acquisitions Group.  Her experience includes acquisitions and sales of companies by private equity funds including cross-boarder transactions; private equity fund formation and administration for funds from $100M to $10B; syndications; financing transactions; and other general corporate matters.

Ms. Moss’s experience also includes starting and running a back-office services company and roles in recruiting and human resources.  She received her BS in Communications from the University of Texas, Austin and her JD from Southern Methodist University.  Ms. Moss guest lectures at the University of Houston Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship and mentors startup company teams.

David Monk

Dave Monk holds a PhD in Physics from Nottingham University in the UK. He is currently Director of Geophysics and a Distinguished Advisor at Apache Corporation. Having started his career on seismic crews in Nigeria he has subsequently been involved in seismic processing and acquisition in most parts of the world. Author of over 100 technical papers or articles and a number of patents, Monk has received “Best Paper” awards from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (1992 and 2005) , the Canadian SEG (2002), and was recipient of the Hagedoorn Award from the European Association of Exploration Geophysics (1994).

Dave received honorary membership of the Geophysical Society of Houston in 2008 and Life membership of the SEG in 2009. He served as President of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) in 2012-2013.

Richard D. Miller

Richard D. Miller (Rick) is a senior scientist at the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS), a research and service division of the University of Kansas (KU). He also holds a courtesy appointment as associate professor of geology at KU. Rick received a B.A. in physics from Benedictine College, an M.S. in physics (emphasis geophysics) from KU, and a Ph.D. in geophysics from the University of Leoben, Austria. He has been a research scientist at the KGS since 1983. His scientific interests focus on the application of shallow, high-resolution seismic methods to a wide assortment of problems ranging from energy to engineering to the environment, and while in pursuit of research success over the last two decades he has competed for and secured over $14 million in sponsorship.

Distinguished by his peers for ground-breaking research in near-surface seismology, Rick was selected SEG’s Inaugural Honorary Lecturer in Near Surface Geophysics in 2012, with lectures at 26 locations over a four-month period in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. He has been invited to present keynote/presidential addresses at a number of international conference venues around the world; a few noteworthy examples include AAPG/SEG/SPE GEOBahrain; EAGE Amsterdam; ICEG in Al Alin, UAE; and ICEEG in Wuhan, China. Rick has delivered invited talks at dozens of universities, government agencies, and professional society meetings. He has published more than 90 refereed journal articles and a half-dozen book chapters, while amassed an H-index of 24. His presentation at AAPG AM in 2002 garnered him the Excellence in Presentation Award and he has received three Best of SAGEEP awards for presentations at EEGS AM in 2002, 2006, and 2007.

David H Johnston

David H Johnston

David H. Johnston is Managing Director of Differential Seismic, LLC, a geophysics consultancy. Dr. Johnston retired from ExxonMobil in 2017 after a 38-year career in research, exploration, and production. He was responsible for the development and commercialization of 4D seismic technology in ExxonMobil and was Geophysics Coordinator for ExxonMobil Production Company where he provided technical and business stewardship of ExxonMobil’s global production geophysics activity. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in earth sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973 and a Ph.D. in geophysics in 1978, also from MIT. Dr. Johnston has received numerous awards from the SEG and in 2013 he served as the SEG Distinguished Short Course Instructor.

Dr. Craig J. Beasley

Craig completed B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and then joined Western Geophysical 1981. He has spent his entire career in Schlumberger companies and their antecedents serving in various technical and management positions including VP for R&D and VP, Data Processing. He has received technical and honorary awards from entities such as Litton Industries, Schlumberger and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, among them the SEG Award for Best Presentation. He has twice received honorable mention for the Best Paper in Geophysics. He is an Honorary Member of the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) and of the Geophysical Society of Houston and is a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

He has presented papers and published widely on a variety of topics ranging from prestack imaging, migration, acquisition and the connections between acquisition, processing and imaging. He pioneered Simultaneous Source technology and has recently worked in broadband seismic techniques and new methods for sparse inversion. He was the 2001-2002 SEG 1st Vice President and the 2004-2005 President of the SEG. He served as the Fall 2009 SEG Distinguished Lecturer as well as the Esso Australia Distinguished Lecturer and as 2014 EAGE Distinguished Lecturer. He was the Founding Chair of the SEG Committee for Geoscientists without Borders. He has enjoyed postings in Singapore and Rio de Janeiro and now is in Houston, recently retired as Chief Geophysicist for WesternGeco and Schlumberger Fellow (Emeritus).

In retirement, he has served as the General Chair for the 2017 SEG Annual Meeting in Houston and sits on the board of the SEG foundation and is enjoying pursing his passion for underwater photography and video. He has recently been elected President-elect for the Geophysical Society of Houston.

Tim Dean

Tim has an Honours degree in Geophysics from Curtin University and a PhD in Physics from the University of New South Wales. He spent more than twelve years working for WesternGeco and Schlumberger in a variety of roles related to surface and borehole seismic acquisition including field operations, software development and research located in Saudi Arabia, England, Norway and Australia. After leaving Schlumberger he worked as a sports technology Project Advisor at Hawk-eye innovations (a division of Sony). He joined the Department of Exploration Geophysics at Curtin University as a Research Fellow in August 2016.

Todd Fockler

Todd is President of Planetary Exploration Corporation, providing acquisition consulting and project management worldwide. Todd is a 35-year active member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He has served as a Technical Editor for SEG in Seismic Acquisition Oral and Poster presentations since 2010.

Todd received a B.S. in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines. At CSM he worked as an instructor for Seismic Field Methods in a hands-on field class for geophysics students. Todd spent his early career as a Field Geophysicist, Party Manager and Supervisor for Western Geophysical in the Middle East and Africa. While working with Western, he wrote several PC programs for refraction analysis and surface-consistent statics that were used on many of its field crews.

Since 1989 he has worked as a Consulting Field Quality Control Geophysicist and Project Manager for more than one hundred projects worldwide.

In 2001 Todd proposed his idea of a simpler, lighter seismic recorder to Aspect Energy. He consulted with Aspect Energy on the concept from 2001-2006. During that time, Todd and his associates were granted several patents for a continuous universal synchronized seismograph. Joining AscendGeo as a full-time employee in 2006, Todd helped with the design and manufacture of the Ultra G4 and G5 recording system and oversaw the field testing in Central America. The Ultra system was the first asynchronous autonomous node recording system.

Dr. John A. “Jack” Ward

Dr. Ward has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He was a consultant and international advisor for Petroleum Geoservices (“PGS”) and Teknica Inc. Employment history prior to Teknica included experience with a U.S major and an independent. He developed many of the techniques employed for seismic reservoir mapping and for the integrated study of hydrocarbon reservoirs. He has extensive experience managing projects within the U.S. for independent and national oil companies and implementing field development strategies.

He is recognized as an expert in seismic inversion, seismic stratigraphy, AVO, and multicomponent interpretation. He has lectured extensively for the SEG, AAPG, IHRDC and New World Horizon in Germany, Venezuela, U.S., Ecuador, Colombia, Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Peru and Bolivia. Dr. Ward received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1979. Dr. Ward served on the Board of Directors and represented PGS on the management team of Triumph Petroleum.
